During Late Palaeolithic times, the retreat of the ice-cap in Europe caused climatic changes in North Africa which gradually became drier. The Nile from being a vast inland lake had shrunk progressively towards its present bed leaving behind eight terraces flanking the hills of the Libyan and Arabian deserts, on the lower four of which the characteristic worked flints of the Early Stone Age have been picked up. In their search for water, the inhabitants of the region were steadily forced into a greater concentration on the verges of the Nile, and it was here that the gradual transition from a hunting to a food-producing economy must have occurred. These early settlers found a valley full of reedy swamps and shallows left by the Nile flood every year and teeming with fish and fowl besides hippopotamus and crocodile. Such conditions persisted to an ever-decreasing extent in historic times though they have since retreated to the Upper Sudan. The wadis that flanked the river with their meadows and low shrubs supported lion, ass, wild cattle, Barbary sheep, ibex, antelope, and other desert game hunted by generations of Egyptians throughout Prehistoric and Pharaonic times.
The first settlers must have found no great compulsion to change their nomadic way of life. Game, fish, and fowl could be hunted or trapped in the Valley, and edible roots such as the papyrus rhizome or plants like the wild Abyssinian banana could be gathered when ripe. But later migrants, presumably from Palestine, brought with them the novel craft of the husbandman, sowing barley or emmer wheat in ground left moist by river flood or rainstorms, and squatting in the vicinity while the crop was growing and being harvested. At some point in this shadowy past, a family or other group of these cultivators must have taken the decisive step of settling permanently in one place to grow these cereals as a main food. There was every incentive for them to do so. For abundant crops could be raised merely by scattering seed on ground ploughed, manured, and watered all in one process by the Nile inundation, and treading it in by foot or hoof. The grain germinated and ripened in the gentle heat of winter and spring. The production on a large scale of food crops that could be stored indefinitely, especially in the dry desert margins, was the first step in a revolution that was to replace a wandering, hand-to-mouth existence by an urban civilization based on agriculture with all that that has meant to mankind in the storing of surplus food, the domestication of animals, the creation of leisure, the specialization in various arts and crafts, and the exercise of some conscious control over the future.
