In 1775, the year after the publication of his Franklin miscellany, Campi, in collaboration with Gian Francesco Fromond, the Milanese savant Carlo Amoretti, and the Somaschian philosopher Francesco Soave, launched the encyclopedic periodical Selection of Interesting Opuscules, which, with its sequel, the Selected Opuscules on the Sciences and Arts, over the following dozen years gave a wide enlightened public a good idea of the complete scientific Franklin. The presence of many of Franklin's minor pieces must have enhanced greatly the desirability of the publication. So great was the demand for the thirty-six tiny tomes of the original Selection that they had to be republished in a three-volume quarto edition.

It may be of interest to note here that Beowulf's role as a great monster-fighter in the water parallels that of Finn mac Cumaill; this is of particular interest since these heroes share yet other roles. Thus, like Beowulf, Finn is famed, as noted in Chapter II, as the adversary of a female monster of tremendous strength and ferocity. Perhaps yet more striking, he is the most popular hero of the "Hand and Child" tales, providing, as will be shown in Chapter X, significant parallels to Beowulf's struggle with Grendel. It must of course be recognized that the far-famed Finn legend has attracted to itself a vast collection of the more popular Irish story motifs and that hence such parallelism hardly proves a direct connection between the legends of Finn and Beowulf, etc.

It rejected the concept of the divine right of kings, patterned the monarchy on the constitutional basis, as sanctioned by man-made laws, and recognised in Parliament the supreme authority, the expression of the ultimate will of the people.

Darwin, however, took it for granted that terms like love, fear and desire can usefully be employed to describe the behaviour of animals -- or at least of mammals -- generally. He accepted the colloquial use of the word emotion. In doing so, he assumed (by implication) that other species have feelings like our own; he also grouped the feelings of both pleasure and unpleasure under one head. Since his time it has gradually been found more convenient to describe animal behaviour, not in terms of feelings of which we are directly aware only in ourselves, but in terms of the activities which can be seen and recorded by any observer; we may also try to describe the internal processes which bring these activities about.

Child labor may not be a significant factor in farming, if the measure is the volume of their production. A 10-year-old boy does not pick as many tomatoes or grapes as his 30-year-old father. But the fact that he is there, in the vines, assisting the family means the family is less likely to go hungry; the child picks and what he earns goes for clothing or food or rent. Ironically, farmers give proof of the importance of the children's working by arguing that if child labor laws are enforced the families will leave and go where children can work.
